Me, LE

I’m Carol Ryland, LE

The LE is for Licensed Esthetician. I’m licensed by the State of Tennessee (2007), as a skin care professional. Since then, I’ve focused my practice on specialty acne care, along with advanced treatments and chemical peels. My modality in treating acne is based on the research and practice of Dr. James Fulton Jr., M.D., Ph.D., one of the most renowned acne experts in the world, and author of Acne Rx.  Laura Cooksey, LE of Face Reality Acne & Skin Care Clinic in San Leandro, California teaches Dr. Fulton’s modality to estheticians from all over the United States in her clinic.  She and Dr. Fulton together developed the home care products I recommend for acne treatment. Laura continues to teach and remains a true mentor to each of us as we care for those of you who suffer with troubled skin.

What do I do? I help people overcome their acne. Too bold? It’s true!
I help people make small changes to treat their problem skin from a number of different angles.

From the first consultation, we’ll talk about how skin functions, how acne develops and why, and I’ll answer as many questions as you’ve got. By analyzing your skin type and the type of acne you have, I’ll be able to develop an action plan. You’ll learn small steps you can take that, by sticking with it, you’ll be on your way to clear skin.

Right now, I’m scheduling appointments six days a week:
Monday through Friday, between the hours of 2pm to 7pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm.

Before I got into professional skin care, I was a stay-at-home mother more than twenty years. Each of my kids are fascinating, kind, creative, awesome people. Really! I am ever grateful to have had those years at home with them. And even now, I am so happy for time spent together!

And before THAT, I was a kid growing up in West Texas (mostly) and New Mexico. I still love the Southwest. Childhood was so awesome! Roller skating (yes the aluminum ones you clamped onto your shoes, completing the look with a skate key worn around your neck on a strand of yarn!).  Swimming at the pool (after riding my bike for miles to get there). Hours in the library helping Mother with cataloging new books, making posters and displays, and reading, reading, reading! Sundays and many other days of the week at my grandparent’s house (Mother’s parents: Muddie & Daddy Hobby). Summer nights spent dodging tornadoes, or at least at Muddie & Daddy Hobby’s house (they built a storm cellar after tornadoes destroyed our tiny town in 1965). We watched the local weather reports on tv, “Shhh! There’s the wheel” which meant the high-tech radar weather report had interrupted our program. You didn’t dare move or utter a word when “the wheel” was on. And if the siren blew, you’d better know where your shoes are, and be putting them on en route to the cellar. Later, the teen years, of course, were spent yearning for somewhere else, but with nostalgia it seems like the best place ever to have grown up. I visit a Facebook page dedicated to my little home town called “Hale Center…You’ve Never Heard of It???”  Lots of memories there!

Random Stuff About Carol
In no particular order:
  • I like to sing and dance, but most of the time I only know the lyrics to the chorus and I just fake it on the rest of the song. My dance moves are from the 70′s on. Most of them look like Snoopydance.
  • I was a band geek in high school and had a shirt from band camp that said “Flutes Do It High”.
  • When I was in my early 20′s, I saw fireflies for the first time. It’s still magical.
  • I have a hard time asking for help. I’m finding that being vulnerable in that way isn’t weakness, but rather strength.
  • I have two pets. Gracie, my English Setter, who has the kindest heart you’ll ever know. And then there’s Emo, the Siamese. You’ll notice I didn’t say “my” cat. Siamese aren’t anybody’s cat. They only need you for food, water and clean litter. And sometimes not even.
  • I love the internet and Facebook and Twitter. Too much. You, too?
  • Mother was a librarian for 27 years. You don’t grow up in that without developing a love of reading, and for books, all kinds. Libraries and book stores — no matter the size — can hold me captive for hours at a time.
  • I’d love for Dr. James Fulton, Joss Stone, John Mayer, Maya Angelou, and Johnny Depp  to know who I am. As far as I can tell, they have no idea.
  • My daughter learned to sew from me. I learned to sew from my mother, who learned from her mother. My daughter and I share the same tattoo: a spool of turquoise thread (Mother’s favorite color) with loops of thread in the shape of a heart.
  • I love reading and writing, zen doodling (yeah, it’s a real thing — find it on YouTube!), live music just about anywhere: point me in the direction!, (dabbling in) yoga, day hiking, coffee houses, roller derby (Yeah! Little City Roller Girls!), playing bocce and backgammon.
  • I do skin care in the afternoons, five or six days a week, since I’m still building clientele. I also cashier part-time at a local market, weekday mornings. I’ll be so SO happy when helping people with their skin is keeping me busy all day, every day, six days a week. What. I need one day a week off!

  1. Carol!! Dang, I wished I lived closer. Do you also address aging skin care? I wish skin care had been more out in the open when we were kids, besides rubbing some noxzema on it & our mothers telling us to get off of the french fries & get those bangs off your face. Acne can be so shameful & cause more than just skin damage.

Then again, nothing was out in the open, was it???

    • Hey, Cathy! Thanks for stopping by! Yes, I do anti-aging skin care, and can help with acne scarring, as well. You’re right — so much has changed since we were kids! Am LOVING helping people with troubled skin. It’s much more than skin deep.
